Approaches that Help Students Generate New Design Solutions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recently a new design methodology, EnvironmentBased Design (EBD) [1, 2] has been developed. In using the model of EBD, three elements are important: primitive synthesis knowledge, primitive environment and primitive solutions. Based on the three elements, three design strategies have been validated in [3] for generating new design solutions: formulating design problems differently, changing the sequence of decomposition of the design problem and extending synthesis knowledge. Increasing the possibilities of generating new design solutions may increase the chance of getting creative design solutions. Thus the three strategies for leading to new design solutions can be introduced into our engineering design education for helping and inspiring students generate creative design solutions. In this paper, we will first briefly introduce EBD model and the three design strategies leading to new design solutions, then explain how EBD can be integrated into the design education of engineering students and elaborate how the design strategies can be used to help students generate different design solutions.

Metaphor: a Creative aid in Architectural Design Process
In the developing world, skills in innovation and creative design have emerged as key attributes for graduating designers. Creativity is essential if we want to generate new solutions to the considerable and complex problems in architecture. Metaphor is frequently expressed as a key tool for enhancing creative design, yet little empirical research has been performed on how novice designers can ...
متن کاملA modeling of collaboration mechanism of design process based on Channel Theory
Collaboration is one of the effective approaches that help us to share knowledge together and exchange ideas within team members. Sometimes, helpful new knowledge that is not held by the members emerges as a result of the collaboration. Such knowledge often contributes to get prime solutions in the collaboration process. However, the way to generate such new knowledge is implicit. In this paper...
متن کاملA fix for fixation? Rerepresenting and abstracting as creative processes in the design of information systems
Fixation prevents the associations that are bridges to new designs. The inability to see alternative solutions, or how known solutions can map onto current problems, is a particularly acute problem in the design of software-intensive systems. Here, we study two related ways of liberating fixated thinking: abstracting and re-representing. We find that both techniques can help designers generate ...
متن کاملAccess to Mathematics by Blind Students
Access to, and doing mathematics, is one of the biggest obstacles for blind students in school and at the university. Our special thematic session (STS) will present new approaches to offering blind students better access to mat, to provide new tools for doing math and offer support tools to math teachers to help them offer better instruction to blind students. In the remainder of this short pa...
متن کاملSoftware Evaluation of an Automated Concept Generator Design Tool
Few computational tools exist to assist designers during the conceptual phase of design where design success is often heavily weighted on personal experience and innate ability. Many wellknown methods (e.g. brainstorming, intrinsic and extrinsic searches, and morphological analysis) are designed to stimulate a designer’s creativity, but ultimately still rely heavily on individual bias and exper...
